On March 21, 2024, in Hanoi, the Environmental and Energy Sector Council organized the scientific conference titled “Advanced Energy and Environmental Technology Solutions Towards Sustainable Development Goals.” This event holds special significance as part of the activities celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment and development of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (1975-2025).
The conference was attended by representatives from the Department of Technology Assessment and Appraisal, Ministry of Science and Technology; University of Natural Sciences (Vietnam National University, Hanoi); leaders from the International Cooperation Department, the Department of Application and Technology Deployment, Hanoi University of Science and Technology; research institutes such as the Institute of Chemistry, Institute of Biology, Institute of Physics, Institute of Advanced Technology, and other scientists in the field of environment and energy from the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
The plenary session of the conference was chaired by Prof. Dr. Trinh Van Tuyen – Chairman of the Scientific Council for Environment and Energy; Prof. Dr. Tran Dai Lam – Vice Chairman of the Environmental and Energy Sector Council and Director of the Institute of Materials Science. The first thematic session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Hue – Chairwoman of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Science and Technology for Energy and Environment and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Thi Kim Dung – Deputy Director of the Institute of Advanced Technology. The second thematic session was chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Do Van Manh – Director of the Institute of Science and Technology for Energy and Environment and Dr. Doan Van Binh – Vice Chairman of the Environmental and Energy Sector Council.
According to Prof. Dr. Trinh Van Tuyen, in the context of deepening globalization and international integration, the scientific and technological sector must continue its efforts, not only in research but also in the practical application of research results to maximize societal benefits. Notably, on December 22, 2024, the Politburo issued Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW on breakthrough developments in science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation. This resolution emphasizes that the development of science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation is a top priority.
As one of the most dynamic economies in the region, Vietnam faces both opportunities and challenges in science and technology to enhance its competitiveness and meet economic and social development demands. Vietnam has affirmed its commitment to the international community and has been recognized by the United Nations as one of the leading countries in implementing sustainable development goals.
The research direction of Environment and Energy is one of the eight key research areas of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, bringing together scientists from various specialized institutes. Over the years, researchers have conducted numerous highly regarded studies and successfully applied them in practice to align with the Academy’s development orientation and national sustainable development goals. Many research projects have been implemented, focusing on environmental quality monitoring and simulation, early warning and pollution control solutions, the development of biological products and materials for pollution treatment, advanced wastewater treatment, recycling technologies, and solid waste treatment towards a circular economy. Recently, AI applications, big data, remote sensing, and GIS technologies have been integrated into environmental monitoring and management.
The conference, organized by the Environmental and Energy Sector Council, centered on key contemporary topics and held special significance in the series of activities celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
The conference proceedings include 40 scientific papers, among which seven are research-oriented review papers presented and discussed in the plenary session. Additionally, six reports belong to the theme “Advanced Methods and Techniques in Environmental Pollution Monitoring and Treatment,” while another six reports are categorized under “Scientific and Technological Solutions for Energy and Environment in a Circular Economy.” These focus on the latest research findings in energy and environmental sciences. The presented papers covered major topics such as modern techniques for environmental monitoring, observation, and analysis; advanced technologies, materials, and biological products for pollution and energy treatment; energy-saving solutions and equipment; and scientific solutions for energy and environmental technology development supporting the circular economy. Scientists proposed new research directions with high applicability in environment and energy, such as smart grid modeling, sustainable industrial clusters, eco-friendly craft villages, and greenhouse gas emission calculation tools for different industries.
The “Advanced Energy and Environmental Technology Solutions Towards Sustainable Development Goals” conference was a great success and was recognized as a valuable forum for leading scientists and experts in energy and environment to exchange academic knowledge, propose new research directions, and introduce advanced scientific and technological solutions for real-world applications, contributing to the country’s sustainable development goals.
